There are two ways to get traffic to any site. You can either get traffic to your website for free, such as SEO or you can use paid advertising; PPC (pay-per-click).
Often, there is a debate and constant warring between which strategy will be the best strategy to implement in exposing your site to the masses.
In actuality, Internet Marketing is a numbers game, and so the more targeted traffic you can get to your website, the more you will convert, and the more money you’ll make.
So which strategy is the best, free or paid?
Search Engine Optimization:
Free marketing strategies; such as SEO, are just as good as paid marketing, if not better. For example, when the majority of people go searching for information online, they go to Google or any other search engine and type in a phrase; such as “How to Cook and Clean”. The results they get back are divided into two parts, and that is Organic and Paid advertising. These differences are usually easy to identify. The organic results are listed on the left hand side and are listed 1-10 through a series of pages, while the paid are listed on the far right hand side.
When doing a search people will often decide which way is best to resolve their dilemma or situation, and most often people tend to use the free results. Thus, this is enough to indicate that if you want to get highly targeted and free traffic to your website it would be a good idea to get into the Organic results. However, many things are involved, including getting backlinks to your site, making sure you have the right keyword density, and optimizing your site. The downside to Search Engine Optimization is that in order to get your website ranked high, it can be very time consuming. This is a reason why many marketers choose to skip SEO and use Pay-Per-Click with Google Adwords, Bing, or Yahoo Overture.
PAY PER CLICK (PPC):
In short, Pay-Per-Click is when you tell Google; or any other company, how much you want to be charged every time your advertisement is clicked. The higher the amount that you set to be charged will often determine how high your website will rank in the search engines. On the other hand, if you set a low amount then your PPC may not give you good results.
The “pros” of PPC marketing is that it takes a small amount of time to get up and running, but the “con” is that you can not just set up a campaign and expect to make tons of money. PPC is a science and should be implemented with strategy, therefore doing the homework is crucial because if you don’t choose the right keywords and/or charges you could end up losing tons of money and FAST. So PPC takes skill, learning, and possibly experience to succeed.
In short, SEO is a great way for beginners to get a site ranked high in organic results. SEO may be frustrating but once you succeed with SEO the benefits are great. This is also true with PPC, but there is much more risk involved since your success is dependent on your money and skill. Overall, it’s necessary to research both SEO and PPC as much as possible before leaning upon either.

Both PPC and SEO have advantages and disadvantages. PPC advantages -You can get immediate sales. -You need little technical knowledge. -Its good for short term projects.
PPC disadvantages -Cost is higher when comparing with SEO. -Traffic is short term.
SEO advantages -ROI is high. -Long term traffic. -You will get traffic from several search engines.
SEO disadvantages -Traffic will not flow immediately. -There is no guarantee for traffic.

I think both SEO and PPC are very effective methods of driving traffic to any site. But, so is email marketing and you did not mention it. I have some things to ADD, SEO is only free if you do it yourself. If you lack the time or the patience to do so then you have to hire someone to do it and in that case you must spend some hefty cash hiring someone with experience to do so.
PPC can be EXTREMELY costly if you do not know how to use it adequately or implement it accordingly. PPC should be used intermittently and not continuously otherwise it will break your bank.
Email marketing is a way to increase traffic that is still VERY effective, as long as you purchase a targeted email campaign.
In essence, I always recommend combining two or more of the different promotional methods, free and paid, in order to maximize results.

PPC and SEO are to great methods of promoting. The main difference is that PPC is more expensive and results are short term as compared to SEO.

If you are ready to spool over huge amounts of cash, then PPC is for you. If you want a more cheaper alternative then SEO is the right one.

In my opinion, SEO is a much more better marketing strategy than PPC. It's slower, but it gives quality results.

PPC and SEO are two different internet marketing methods which have their won benefits and drawbacks. It all depends on the business goal you are looking for. If you are expecting some quick profit or results, then PPC is your obvious choice but SEO helps to generate long term results although the results are not shown up immediately.

SEO means search engine optimization it is the process which is used to promote the website on search engines. SEO is also a part of Internet marketing Few following parts of SEO are
Forum Posting, Article Submission, Social Bookmarking, Directory Submission, Blog Commenting
PPC means pay per click. It is also a part of internet marketing in this type of advertising advertiser pay the fix amount of per visit to the publisher means publisher publish advertiser ads and when some user visit on advertiser ads then advertiser pay the fix amount of per visit to the publisher.
But SEO is more cost-effectice and useful than PPC.

PPC and SEO are both good in enhancing your website and boosting web traffic but I guess there are many blogger and entrepreneurs use SEO rather than PPC.

Two of the most talked about internet marketing strategies are search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click advertising. One of the questions we here at Vertical Measures get asked the most is, "Should I invest in SEO or should I invest in pay per click (PPC) advertising?" The short answer is "yes".
Everyone is after the same goal: how to get more people to visit your website. And how do you do that? Well, you have to be more visible to those who are looking for what you are selling. The best way to do that is to get onto page one of Google. But how? Is it better to be in the top 10 organic listing or the number one sponsored link position?

This is the most important thing about it. PPC and SEO are two different internet marketing methods which have their won benefits and drawbacks. It all depends on the business goal you are looking for. So both are very necessary to get the high level traffic to the site.
